Master Tilman
Master Tilman of Cologne is one of the few carvers and sculptors of the late 15th century that has been documented; He probably created a large number of sculptures with his Cologne workshop, which can be found mainly in and around Cologne.
State of research
Until the 1970s, Master Tilman was equated with the stonemason Tilman van der Burch . In the meantime, however, he is mostly identified with Tilman Heysacker called Krayndunck in the latest attributions . Master Tilman, who probably learned from the wood carver Master Arndt in Kalkar († 1492, also Arnt and Arndt von Zwolle), worked in Cologne from around 1475 to 1515 according to documented orders. “In 1487 Master Tilman received the order for the grave figures of Count Gerhard II. Von Sayn and his wife Elisabeth von Sierck in the monastery church of Marienstatt in the Westerwald, in 1505 he worked on an altarpiece for the Wesel Calvary Chapel (now in St.Martini) and in 1509 / 10 he created a succession of apostles in the parish church of Siegburg . These three groups of works of different style levels, archived and preserved for Tilman, form the stable framework for numerous attributions of further works beginning around 1475 in a style-critical way ”. At that time, his workshop was probably Cologne's leading carving workshop, which also supplied its figures in the region from Wesel to the Moselle and as far as Dortmund.
