Melvin "Mel" M. Long, senior (* 22. November 1946 in Toledo , Ohio ) is a former American American football poker players and soldier. He played three seasons as linebacker for the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League (NFL).

Career

After graduating from high school, he went to the Vietnam War as a soldier , where he worked for his service a. a. got the Navy Cross , the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal . On his return in 1968, he went to the University of Toledo , where he got a place on the football team of the Toledo Rockets . There he played between 1969 and 1971, a time when the Rockets won all of their 35 games and won the Mid-American Conference three times in a row , in the position of defensive tackle . In his last two seasons he was voted All-American .

Long was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 278th player in the 1972 NFL Draft in the eleventh round . For the Browns he played three seasons in the position of linebacker , where he ran up in every game, but was never a starter . After leaving the NFL, he tried to gain a foothold in the fledgling World Football League , but did not succeed.

In 1999, Long was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame . An anniversary team was elected in 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Rockets. Long ended up in fourth place.

Personal

Long's son, Mel Long, Jr. , also played college football for the Rockets, where he was one of the best wide receivers in team history. He later played professional Canadian and arena football .
