Melchior Baumgartner
Melchior Baumgartner (born December 25, 1621 in Augsburg ; † 1686 there ) was a German cabinet maker ( Kistler ).
Life
Melchior Baumgartner was the son of Ulrich Baumgartner , the best cabinet maker from Augsburg of his time. He continued his father's workshop, which specialized in the manufacture of art cabinets ( called desks in his day ) in collaboration with other artisans.
Older art-historical research doubted the existence of Melchior Baumgartner, as works were historically assigned to him that were clearly made by his father. Oscar Doering (1858–1936) interpreted the name in the Thieme-Becker entry as a misspelling of Ulrich Baumgartner's name by Paul von Stetten . Von Stetten had attributed to him the art cabinet, which was given to King Gustav II Adolf (Sweden) as a gift from the city of Augsburg in 1632 and is now in the Gustavianum Museum in Uppsala , which could not be correct. It was not until 1975 that Georg Himmelheber proved its existence and was able to clearly identify works.
Since May 8, 1656 he was married to Maria, geb. Wegeler.
