Melchior Bischoff
Melchior Bischoff (born May 20, 1547 in Pößneck , † December 19, 1614 in Coburg ) was a German Protestant hymn poet and clergyman .
Life
Melchior Bischoff, son of a shoemaker , worked as a teacher at the city school in Rudolstadt from 1568 and then worked as a cantor in Altenburg . Appointed deacon in his hometown in 1570, he was withdrawn from office by visitors in 1574 because he did not recognize the Philippian articles. After working as a pastor in Geckenheim and from 1579 in Thundorf , he took over a pastor's position in Franconia . After the Philippists were overthrown, he was employed as a pastor in Pößneck in 1585. In 1590 Bischoff was called to Coburg to become court preacher . On December 16, 1594, he gave the funeral sermon for Elisabeth, the wife of Duke Johann Friedrich, and on November 16, 1595 for Duke Johann Friedrich himself. Both bodies had been brought to Coburg from Austrian captivity. He was appointed superintendent of Eisfeld in 1597 and general superintendent of Coburg in 1599. On 16./17. September 1599 he gave the church blessing to the second marriage of Duke Johann Casimir (Saxony-Coburg) with Margarethe von Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Coburg . Bischoff composed several songs that were published in Coburg hymn books. On July 19, 1620, Melchior Bischoff gave the funeral sermon for the late Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I. Some of his sermons have been printed and are available digitally.
