Melinda Marilyn Snodgrass (born November 27, 1951 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American writer , screenwriter and producer in the fields of science fiction and fantasy . She also publishes under the pseudonym Phillipa Bornikova .

Life

Snodgrass was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Albuquerque , New Mexico , where her family moved when she was only five months old. She first learned ballet , singing and piano . For this she came to Austria for a while and studied at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna . After her return to America, however, the focus of her interests shifted and she now majored in history and music as a minor. Although she graduated with the grade Magna cum laude , due to poor career prospects, she began a second degree in law at the New Mexico School of Law . After graduation, she worked as a lawyer for three years .

Encouraged by Victor Milán , Snodgrass began writing science fiction stories in the 1980s. Her first work was the 1984 Star Trek novel The Tears of the Singers (German: The tears of the singers ). In the same year, she and George RR Martin developed the Wild Cards series, a series of short stories - anthologies and novels about an alternate world populated by superheroes . The first of so far 27 volumes (as of August 2019) was published in 1987. Between 1986 and 1988, Snodgrass also published the three-volume Curcuit series about a judge who travels through the solar system .

At Martin's insistence, Snodgrass began working as a screenwriter in 1988. She initially wrote a screenplay for the series Raumschiff Enterprise - The Next Century without commission , which convinced the production company Paramount and was finally filmed in the second season of the series under the title The Measure of a Man (German: Who owns data? ). As the only episode in the series, The Measure of a Man was nominated for a WGA Award by the Writers Guild of America . After this initial success, Snodgrass was involved in 15 other scripts in the series until 1990. Until 2002 she wrote for eleven other television series and films , including between 1998 and 1999 for the series Profiler , for which she also worked as a consulting producer.

In 2002, Snodgrass retired as a screenwriter and became a manager at a small natural gas company in New Mexico that her father ran until his death in 1977. In addition, she continues to work as a writer.
