The 152 km long Mera ( Russian Ме́ра ) is a left tributary of the Volga in the Kostroma Oblast and the Ivanovo Oblast in the European part of Russia .
River course
The Mera rises around 3 km west of the village of Perwuschino . From there it first flows south through the densely wooded southwest of Kostroma Oblast . After about one kilometer, the Yaroslavl - Kostroma - Galitsch railway line crosses it. In Pervuschino, a branch line branches off from this to Savolschsk , on which only goods are transported and which now largely follows the course of the Mera to the border with Ivanovo Oblast .
The river continues to flow very curvy mainly in a southerly direction and passes numerous small towns. Its largest tributary, the Medosa, flows into it about 10 km south of Ostrowskoje . Shortly after the confluence of the Sendega , the Mera crosses the border to Ivanovo Oblast around 5 km north of Savolschsk , where the backwater of the Gorkier reservoir , to which the Volga is dammed, can be felt after just a few kilometers . The Mera widens in this area and is navigable for the bottom 10 km. At Saretschny the Mera finally reaches the Volga.
The Mera is fed from different sources, but meltwater predominates . The river is frozen between November and April.
