Merkers-Kieselbach was a municipality in the Wartburg district in Thuringia , which existed from 1994 to December 30, 2013.

Merkers-Kieselbach lay on both sides of the Werra between the Thuringian Forest and Rhön Mountains .

Community structure

The municipality of Merkers-Kieselbach consisted of the districts of Merkers , Kieselbach and the small district of Kambachsmühle .

history

The district Kieselbach was first mentioned in 1155 by the monastery of Hersfeld, the district Merkers in 1308.

The two formerly independent communities of Merkers and Kieselbach merged in 1994 to form the unified community of Merkers-Kieselbach.

On December 31, 2013, Merkers-Kieselbach and the neighboring community of Dorndorf were merged into the new Krayenberg community .

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Uwe Reipert and introduced on July 1, 1994. The wavy bar with the pebbles symbolizes the place name Kieselbach, the castle represents the Krayenburg.

Culture and sights

Buildings

  • Merkers Adventure Mine - When it opened , the world's largest potash mine attracts thousands of visitors every year to the “world of white gold”. Large parts of the Reich gold reserve, cash and works of art were hidden here in 1945.
  • Fortified church in the Kieselbach district - the church was built in 1563. The oldest of its three bronze bells dates from 1462 and probably comes from the chapel on the Krayenburg.
  • Historic half-timbered houses in both districts - in Kieselbach there is the oldest surviving and inhabited four-sided courtyard.
  • "Country Canyon" in Kieselbach - The former old sandstone quarry was lovingly and carefully converted into a western village by the Country Club Kieselbach.
  • Regional Museum Krayenbergregion - In the local museum of the district Kieselbach history can be experienced and the visitor gets interesting insights into the home and customs of Kieselbach and the surrounding area.
  • “Andreas-Fack-Haus” - In the birth house of the Rhönlied poet Andreas Fack in Merkers, a small museum has been lovingly set up in his honor.

The Merkers industrial park is located on the eastern outskirts of Merkers on the site of the former mine. It has a total area of ​​70 hectares (as of 2009). The Am Hämbacher Kreuz industrial area is also important; it is right on the border with the Hämbach district of Tiefenort.

The federal road 62 leads in a west-east direction through the place Merkers, the federal road 84 through Kieselbach.

Others

During the Second World War , 700 prisoners of war as well as women and men from numerous occupied countries had to do forced labor : in the potash pits I and II of Merkers, in the pits I and II in Kaiseroda and Hämbach as well as in agriculture.
