Merritt Finley Miller

Merritt Finley Miller (also Merritt F. Miller , MF Miller ; born July 7, 1875 in Grove City , Ohio , † December 12, 1965 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American agronomist and soil scientist .

Life

Family and education

Born in Grove City, Merritt Finley Miller, son of Edward Miller and Eliza Demorest Miller, was baptized Episcopalian and studied at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware from 1895 to 1896 after graduating from high school . He then began studying agricultural science at Ohio State University in Columbus, and in 1900 he received a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. He continued his studies at Cornell University in Ithaca , in 1901 he graduated with a Master of Agricultural Science. From 1910 to 1911, Miller studied abroad at the Georg August University in Göttingen and from 1933 to 1934 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Merritt Finley Miller married Flora Grace Ernst on December 19, 1914. The children Edward Ernst, Elizabeth Marie, Robert Demorest and Daniel Weber emerged from the marriage. Miller died in Columbus in December 1965 at the age of 90. He found his final resting place in the local Green Lawn Cemetery.

Professional background

After graduating, Merritt Finley Miller was employed as a Soil Surveyor in the US Department of Agriculture for one year . He then took a position as an instructor in agronomy at Ohio State University, in 1903 he was promoted to assistant professor . In 1904 Miller followed a call as Professor of Agronomy at the University of Missouri in Columbia . Since 1914 Miller taught as Professor of Soils , in 1938 he resigned from this position. Subsequently, he worked as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, in 1945 he was retired .

Merritt Finley Miller, a recognized artisan in the fields of crop science and soil science, author of bulletins relating to the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station and numerous articles in professional journals, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . The Freemason Miller was a member of the American Society of Agronomy, the American Society of Soil Science, the International Society of Soil Science , the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta, the Collegiate Society for Agriculture, Alpha Zeta, the Acacia Fraternity and in of the Sigma Xi Scientific Association . The Kansas State College and Ohio State University paid tribute to his achievements by awarding honorary doctorates .
