Warning system

The system includes the following extreme weather (as of 2012):

These are shown with simple pictograms.

Classification

The risk levels are classified according to the local frequency or phenomenological effect, which takes into account the regional weather and weather conditions and makes the extent of the exceptional situation on site comparable.

  • The following applies at the European level:
colour Meaning of the colors
green There is no need to pay special attention to the weather.
yellow The weather is potentially dangerous. The forecasted weather phenomena are not uncommon, but increased attention should be paid to activities that are exposed to meteorological risks. Keep up to date with the expected meteorological conditions and do not take any avoidable risks.
orange The weather is dangerous. Unusual meteorological phenomena were predicted. Damage and accidents are likely. Be very attentive and careful and keep yourself fully informed about the expected meteorological conditions. Be aware of unavoidable risks. Follow any instructions from your authorities.
red The weather is very dangerous. Unusually intense meteorological phenomena were predicted. Extreme damage and accidents, often over large areas, threaten life and property. Inform yourself continuously and in detail about expected meteorological conditions and dangers. In any case, follow the instructions and advice of your authorities and prepare yourself for extraordinary measures.

  • At the country level, the warning situation of each participating country applies
  • Regional information gives the specific warning information for that region

A region always receives the highest warning level that occurs there.

cover

Coverage takes place in warning classes for the federal states (and comparable administrative units) of the participating states. Since August 2012, the ZAMG in Austria has been the first of the weather services to offer the alarm levels - freely available on the Internet - down to community level.

organization

history

Meteoalarm was developed as part of a European project by several national weather services under the direction of the Salzburg meteorologist Michael Staudinger and the Dutch meteorologist Frank Kroonenberg - the occasion was Hurricane Kyrill . The warning platform meteoalarm.eu (or .info ) is managed by the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) in Vienna and supported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It was presented in 2007 on March 23, World Meteorology Day , in Madrid. In 2008 the system included warnings from 30 countries and was available in 27 languages. It is also intended to be included in the Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment ( THORPEX ) as part of the WMO's World Weather Research Program (WWRP).

The two founders were awarded the Outreach and Communication Award 2008 by EUMETNET . The intuitive warning system based on colors and pictograms and comparable throughout Europe is a particular advantage. The website was accessed 12 million times on the first day and averaged 200,000 hits / day by 2008.

In 2012 32 countries were involved, in 2014 34, and 32 languages were implemented.

International participation of the weather services

Currently (as of 2014) 34 state weather services in Europe are involved in this project: ZAMG (Austria), FMHZ (Bosnia-Herzegovina), RMI (Belgium), NIMH (Bulgaria), Cyprus MS (Cyprus), CHMU (Czech Republic), DWD (Germany), DMI (Denmark), EMHI (Estonia), FMI (Finland), Meteo France (France), HNMS (Greece), DHMZ (Croatia), OMSZ (Hungary), Metéirann (Ireland), VERDUR (Iceland), METEOAM (Italy), Service météorologique de Luxembourg (Luxembourg), LVGMC (Latvia), Malta International Airport (Malta), NHMS (Macedonia), HMZCG (Montenegro), KNMI (Netherlands), NMI (Norway), IMGW (Poland), IIPMA (Portugal), Meteo Romania (Romania), HIDMET (Serbia), SMHI (Sweden), MeteoSchweiz (Switzerland), ARSO (Slovenia), SHMU (Slovakia), AEMet (Spain), MetOffice (Great Britain)

This means that more than 650 regions across Europe are warned of severe weather in a uniform warning system.
