Methanocaldococcus is taxonomically a genus of prokaryotic microorganisms . Methanocaldococcus belongs to the domain of the living beings Archaea and is a methane producer .

All species in Methanocaldococcus are methanogenic microorganisms. Use hydrogen to carbon dioxide to reduce . Unlike many other species in the Euryarchaeota department , they cannot use formate , acetate , methanol, or methylamine as a substrate. Almost all Methanocaldococcus species are mesophilic , with the exception of the thermophilic M. thermolithotrophicus and the hyperthermophilic M. jannaschii . The latter a "white was at the base of the smoker" on the East Pacific Rise discovered and it was the first archaea - genome that completely sequenced was.

Systematics

The descriptions of the genus and the family were made through publications recognized by the International Association of Microbiological Societies ( IUMS ) and thus became so-called effective publications:

  • Whitman (2001) - Effective publication on the genus Methanocaldococcus.
  • Whitman et al. (2001) - Effective publication on the Methanocaldococcacae family.
  • IUMS (2002) - validation list number 85, official publication of the International Association of Microbiological Societies ( IUMS ) for the validation of names, including for the family ( Methanocaldococcaceae WHITMAN et al. 2002) and the genus ( Methanocaldococcus WHITMAN 2002 ).

It should be noted that the representatives of the genus Methano caldo coccus , which were already described when it came into force, were previously in the genus Methanococcus . For example, M. jannaschii was officially called Methanococcus jannaschii before 2002 and Methano caldo coccus jannaschii from 2002 .
