Methow ( ˈmɛt.haʊ ) is a municipality-free area in Okanogan County in the US state of Washington . At the United States Census 2000 there were 262 residents here.

history

Methow was founded in 1889 by WA Bolinger when he moved his shop from the former miners' boom town on Squaw Creek (about four miles - 6.4 km - south). It is named after the Methow , a tribe of the inland Salish who lived in the area. The name "Methow" itself comes from the Okanagan ( / mətxʷú / ) and means "sunflower (nsamen)". The unparalleled area has its own community center, post office, fire station, church, water supply, and two parks. The Methow Store , originally built by WA Bolinger, and the restaurant, have not been in operation since 2009. The place is one of the main starting points for rafting on the Methow River .

Historical plaque in Methow (Washington)

The original Methow store is just off Washington State Route 153 . Exactly opposite on the other side of the street is a large historical stone house built by the Bolinger family. The small town also houses two old school buildings, each with a classroom. One of these is just north of the Methow Store; most people perceive it as "the old wooden hut". The other school building is now used as a community center. The church in Methow was built over a hundred years ago. The population of Methow has remained constant at around 50 over the past few decades. The population in the surrounding Methow Valley has increased significantly over the past two decades.
