In chemistry, methoxybenzyl alcohols form a group of substances that are derived from both benzyl alcohol and anisole . The structure consists of a benzene ring with attached hydroxymethyl  (-CH 2 OH) and methoxy groups  (-OCH 3 ) as substituents . Their different arrangement results in three constitutional isomers with the empirical formula C 8 H 10 O 2 . Primarily they can be viewed as methoxy substituted benzyl alcohols. 4-Methoxybenzyl alcohol is mainly known by its common name anisalcohol , which is used, among other things, as a fragrance. In the English-language literature, the term anisyl alcohol is also used for the 2- and 3-methoxybenzyl alcohols.
