Metro 2033 (formerly with the subtitle "The Last Refuge") is a first person shooter from the Ukrainian developer 4A Games and the publisher THQ . It is based on the novel Metro 2033 by Dmitri Gluchowski . The game was released in Europe and the US in March 2010 for Xbox 360 and Windows . With Metro: Last Light , a successor was released on May 17, 2013.

action

The plot is based on the dystopian novel of the same name by the Russian author Dmitri Alexejewitsch Gluchowski from 2007, but deviates from its plot in some places.

The earth was devastated in 2013 in an unspecified nuclear war. In Moscow , the few survivors, around 10,000 people, have saved themselves in the large underground network, the Moscow Metro . The earth's surface and some tunnels can only be entered with a protective mask (in the game gas mask) due to the exposure to radioactive substances. Over time, the ionizing radiation has created a large number of mutants there, which often attack the metro stations. But not only mutants, but also bandits, communists and fascists populate the metro. Since the nuclear war, the individual stations of the metro have developed into independent miniature states over the course of time , which trade and form alliances with other stations, but often also wage wars for living space, food, commercial goods, fuel and for their new and old ideologies . There are also the mysterious "blacks" who can drive people crazy.

In 2033, the player will take on the role of 20-year-old Artyom, who leaves to comply with a request from a ranger named Hunter to find a person named Miller in what is arguably the largest metro station, Polis, that is still inhabited by humans. The player crosses abandoned tunnels, the icy surface and partly civilized, partly overrun stations. The people of the metro are desperate because of the attacks and the appearance of the "blacks" who are once described as Homo novus . Often the protagonist is confronted with the "blacks", but in contrast to the general appearance, they save the player's life in vision-like cutscenes.

In contrast to the novel, the player can bring about two different endings. On the one hand, the “bad” ending (The Destruction of the “Blacks”), which corresponds to the end in the novel; on the other hand, the happy ending, in which the player averts the annihilation of the "blacks" by pushing the device that transmits the coordinates of the "blacks" headquarters to the rockets from the top of the tower. The latter is only possible if the player adheres to certain guidelines: interacting (e.g. playing guitar), helping (e.g. giving beggars ammunition and thus money) and finding hiding places in which weapons, equipment and interactive tools can be found Objects.

Gameplay

Metro 2033 is a first person shooter with elements of the survival horror genre. The plot is linear, so that the player can only deviate slightly from the plotted course of action. The plot is also continued in numerous cutscenes and dialogues. Despite the shooter focus, the player can sneak past some opponents. To provide variety, some scenarios have been implemented. On the one hand, the player has to defend a station from attacking mutants, on the other hand, it is necessary to flee from the approaching fascists in a fortified wagon or to escort a person safely through enemy territory. Strange and dangerous anomalies, caused by the nuclear impact, as well as contaminated and radiant areas, the player must also survive. The existence of the mutants is explained by the nuclear contamination. There are no demons or magic. Nevertheless, at some points the player deals with paranormal situations, be it the appearance of ghosts or the inclusion of the "blacks" in the action. This sometimes creates a very gloomy atmosphere. The game offers two possible endings, which are made dependent on around 60 decisions in the course of the game. Instead of money or various goods, the currency in the game is special, stronger ammunition that dates back to the prewar period. So you can literally run out of money or save it and buy better equipment. The game was released uncut in Germany.

development

Course of development

Some employees of 4A Games were previously employed by the Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World , where, among other things, the post-apocalyptic STALKER series based on the novel Picnic on the wayside by Arkadi and Boris Strugazki was created ( Shadow of Chernobyl , Clear Sky , Call of Pripyat ). In the summer of 2006 it became known that Stalker project manager Andrew 'Prof' Prokhorov and other employees had left the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World and were now working on Metro 2033 . The first screenshots were published and a release announced for the end of 2008. At the Games Convention in August 2006, a trailer with scenes from a pre-alpha version was shown. For more than two years there was no news until a new trailer was released in December 2008: the settings and the broken English of the off-speaker were almost identical to the Games Convention trailer. In details such as the lighting and the behavior of the NPCs, however, clear progress could be seen, which contributed to a livelier atmosphere. Together with the announcement that THQ will act as publisher, a new trailer was released in October 2009.

technology

The game uses the 4A engine , an in-house development of the development studio. The software PathEngine was licensed for the title , with which the movements of NPCs within the 3D world can be efficiently calculated. Some of the 3D models were designed by the Ukrainian service provider KoreybaArts.

reception

The PC version has a Metascore over 81%, the Xbox 360 77%. The atmosphere and the graphics were generally praised, among other things the short duration of the game and the linear plot were criticized. The PC game magazine GameStar rated the game with 85%.

Successor and Redux version

On May 17, 2013, Metro: Last Light, the successor to Metro 2033, was released . The story and the plot of Metro: Last Light are based on the "bad" ending (see plot) of Metro 2033 and build on it.

In May 2014, Deep Silver unveiled the work on so-called Redux versions for Metro 2033 and Last Light . In addition to the release for Windows, the publisher also announced issues for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles previously released in the winter . The versions available individually or as a package have been technically adapted (graphics, AI, weapon handling) to the level of Last Light , apart from the respective main game, the download extensions are also included. The development for the PS4 / Xbox One version took place under adverse circumstances due to the Ukraine crisis in 2014 . In order to get the necessary developer kits for the new consoles, they first had to be smuggled through customs by employees in hand luggage, as otherwise high customs fees were expected due to the corruption in the country. The studio only received the necessary developer hardware for the PS4 at the end of 2013 and that of the Xbox One only in January 2014.

The versions for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One were released on August 29, 2014. Owners of the original PC versions received a 50% discount on new purchases. Nevertheless, there were customer complaints about the price. In contrast, the developer referred to the high development effort involved in revising the engine and adapting the games, which would have taken the entire team of 80 people over a year. The Redux versions have also been available for Linux since December 2014 . In April 2015, Deep Silver reported 1.5 million copies of the Redux packages sold at the same time as the Mac version was released.

At E3 2017, the successor Metro Exodus from developer 4A Games was presented for the first time during a Microsoft press conference. It was released on February 15, 2019 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . Much of the development team previously worked on the Stalker series.
