Metro 2033 Universe
The Metro-2033-Universe is a book series that builds on the dystopian novel Metro 2033 by the Russian author Dmitri Gluchowski from 2007 and is intended to continue the idea of the basic novel .
background
The plot of the original novel takes place in a future Moscow , the above-ground part of which has become uninhabitable after a nuclear war , so that the survivors are forced to live in the metro , which has also been partially destroyed . With his novel, Dmitri Gluchowski has created a vision of the future, which is presented in the various books of the Metro 2033 universe. His intention is that he wants to induce different writers from all over the world to describe one and the same fictional world and thus to create an alternative reality. In the books published so far, more and more protagonists and their fates are introduced into this “great post-apocalyptic saga”.
At first there were only novels that were set in the regions of Russia, but the universe was expanded beyond the Russian borders in 2010/2011 with the help of an Italian and a British author. In the future it is planned to let even more authors from different countries take part in this project. So far (as of 2015) there are German translations of books on Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk and Italy.
The Moscow Metro
- Community of Ring Stations (Hanse)
- The ring station community can be viewed as a trading community . There are strict customs controls on the import and export of goods. And you can only come to the Hanseatic League with a valid passport with a visa. It was introduced extensively in the first novel Metro 2033 and is the dominant political force of underground Moscow.
- The polis
- The Polis, which consists of the four central transfer stations, is the metro's unofficial intellectual and cultural “capital”. Everything is in abundance here: water, electricity, food. A caste system has formed, the most important of which are those of the guardians of knowledge and those of the military. This grouping is also described in detail in the original novel.
- Red line
- The red line (the former Sokolnicheskaya line ) is inhabited by communists and is only described in more detail in the novel Metro 2034 . The people are oppressed by a totalitarian regime and have no freedom of expression. After the failed conquest of the entire metro, the communist leadership propagated the goal of “communism on one line”, a modification of socialism in one country .
- VDNKh Federation
- The VDNKh -Föderation is the starting point of the novel Metro 2033 and thus the entire Metro-2033 universe. Regardless of this overarching importance, it is described as a relatively insignificant community on the northern Kalushsko-Rishskaya line , which is best known for the production of tea.
- Fourth empire
- The grouping of the fourth Reich is oriented towards National Socialism . They believe that there is a master race . In their opinion, only the "real Russians" should be allowed to colonize the metro. The empire consists of the three stations of the Chekhovskaya - Pushkinskaya - Tverskaya node .
- Confederation 1905
- Originally occupying the entire western Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya line , the confederation is only a smaller faction in 1905 after the loss of its western stations to the mutants, which was not explained in detail. Because of her left-wing attitude she wages a guerrilla war with the neighboring Fourth Reich.
- University ("Emerald City")
- The connection to the rest of the metro was cut off by the collapse of a bridge. But there is a rumor that the last professors and doctoral students who have found a way to get over the surface into the "big metro" in protective suits they have developed are staying in the metro stations of the university in the western part of the Sokolnicheskaya line .
- Arbat Confederation
- A small group of stations on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line . In the starting novel, her role as mediator between the warring groups of the Hanseatic League and the Communists is emphasized.
- Kalinin Confederation
- The Kalinin Confederation, introduced in the novel The Marble Paradise , comprises the six easternmost stations of the Kalininskaya Line . It is one of the most economically and politically stable regions of the metro, but due to its remote location, other stations are of the opinion that it was haunted and anomalous.
- Trotskyists and anarchists
- According to the ideologies of Trotskyism or anarchism , these groups reject the ruling structures that have arisen in the larger factions. In some cases, smaller peripheral stations are under their control. A more detailed description of an anarchist station (the Vojkovskaya on the Samoskvorezkaya Line ) is first given in the novel In the Tunnel .
- Organized crime
- The Russian mafia also survived the nuclear war and settled underground. Their bases are located at two intermediate stations on the Kalushsko-Rishskaya line .
- The Russian government
- The novel Metro 2035 shows that there is still a Russian government sitting in Metro 2 . It controls the leadership of the other factions and plays them off against each other. It also maintains jammers around Moscow to seal off the metro from the rest of the world.
- Jehovah's Witnesses
- You are in an abandoned train station and consider the past war to be Armageddon . They are now waiting for the kingdom of heaven to come soon .
- Satanists
- They believe the metro is the threshold to hell and, with the help of slaves, dig a huge hole under the Timiryazevskaya station (to the north of the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya line ). They are first described in more detail in the novel Im Tunnel .
- Trunk of the big worm
- A group of cannibals who believe in an invented religion according to which a large worm is said to have dug the many underground tunnels. It lives in a separate station in the west (Park Pobedy) of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line with a connection to the Metro-2.
- Mutants
- The blacks - humanoid creatures with a skin of earthy black leather that try to make contact with humans. Their warehouse is located near the former botanical garden. Through an open hermetic gate, they enter the metro and move towards the VDNKh. They are difficult to stop and can build psychological pressure on people. They continue to advance even if stopped by heavy machine gun fire.
- Librarians - The physique is similar to that of a gorilla. They live in the ruins of the Lenin Library and attack every source of noise. They have very sharp curved claws that can inflict deep wounds on the enemy. They can also imitate human language. They are likely the product of a human mutation.
- Molodyoshnaya Mutants - Since the Molodjozhnaya station in the west of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line is exposed to strong radiation, its residents have mutated greatly and have developed parapsychological skills.
The Petersburg Metro
- Vegan empire
- The vegan empire lies on the eastern part of line 3 and is portrayed as a sadistic slave-holding society. The vegans try to create a new humanoid species through human experiments, drug experiments and the crossing of humans and plants that can survive on the contaminated surface.
- Primorsky Alliance
- The alliance shares line 3 with the vegans and is their political counterweight. Although it presents itself to the outside as a democracy, it is in reality a ruthless military dictatorship that sacrifices the population of entire stations to their plans.
- Eden
- The pre-war civilization has largely been preserved in the Petersburg branch of Metro Zwei . There is sufficient electricity, a government, an education system, food supplies and technical equipment. The existence of Eden is kept secret from the rest of the metro.
- Communists
- Unlike in Moscow, the communists in St. Petersburg are not one of the larger factions. They dominate the southern stations of Line 2 and try to build a tunnel from here to Moscow, 700 kilometers away.
- Masutes
- The residents of the Technologichesky Institute station are called Masuts (freely translated: oil lubricators, derived from Masut ). Among them are the most capable engineers and mechanical engineers in the city, whose products are sold to all stations of the Petersburg Metro.
- Moscow faction
- The people living in the Ploshchad Vosstaniya station mainly come from travelers and visitors from Moscow who were unable to leave Petersburg because of the nuclear war. At the beginning still one of the most influential factions, the Muscovites descend in the novels Piter and The Journey in the Darkness to vassals of the Primorsky Alliance.
- The "stub"
- Due to radiation and inbreeding, the so-called stubs are severely degenerated. They have organized themselves in a primitive tribal society and live outside the metro in the underground museum of the defenders of Leningrad .
- Free stations
- In addition to the large groups mentioned, various splinter groups rule the Petersburg Metro. None of them controls more than one station, some even just individual bunkers or connecting tunnels.
- Mutants
- Zombels - The zombels have completely lost their humanity through continued radiation. Similar to the zombies they were named after, they are only driven by basic sensations such as hunger and pain.
- Blokadniks - It is unclear whether Blokadniks are of human origin. They are large, upright humanoid creatures that usually appear individually. Since practically no one survives an encounter with them, little is known about them.
