à la carte card game award 2001: 1st place

The game Meuterer is a card game by Marcel-André Casasola Merkle . In 2001 it was awarded the à la carte card game prize by the trade journal “Fairplay”.

In this card game with 66 different cards, the 3 - 4 players as crew members of a merchant ship slip into changing roles with different advantages:

  • captain
  • Mutineers
  • Cabin boy
  • Maat and
  • Loadmaster

Course of the game (brief description)

The captain (the starting player in each case) and is the only character known at the beginning of each round. He wants to sell rubies, salt, wine, cloth or grain (cards) at a profit. There are twelve islands (cards) to choose from as buyers, each accepting different goods. Whoever offers the most cards of one kind earns profit points. During a bidding round you can get out to secretly take a character card. Then you can start a mutiny , although you don't know in advance who is on whose side. To do this, you take the (remaining) character cards from the middle and choose the character you want. It should be noted that the mate always plays with the captain, the mutineer with the cabin boy, loadmaster and trader play alone. Mutineers and cabin boys try to overthrow the captain with the display of higher cards, but he can get support from the mate. Depending on the outcome of the duel, the captain, point distribution and the new port of destination change. As a dealer you can gain advantages when selling goods, as a load master you can choose from several cards when drawing cards.

Game objective

You have to collect points throughout the game. You receive points when you sell goods successfully, as a captain (possibly by winning a mutiny) for heading to a new island and when you successfully buy goods as a trader. At the end of a round everyone refills their hand of cards. You still need a pencil and paper to make a note. After eight (with three players: nine) game rounds, the player with the most points wins.

evaluation

According to the award winners, the game has the complexity of a board game , with enough pretension, bluff , strategy and tactics.
