Mexia (pronunciation: [ mɘ̄hɘ̄ja ]) is a city in Limestone County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is located at the junction of the US Highway 84 with the Highways 14 and 171 in the middle east of Texas, about 65 km east of Waco and has a total area of ​​13.3 km² without any significant water surface.

history

The place was named after the Mexia family , who settled on the site of today's city in 1833. In 1871 the Houston and Texas Central Railway moved its tracks here and in 1872 the first post office was opened. The first newspaper, the Ledger , was founded in Fairfield in 1869 and relocated there in the same year.

In Mexia, a prisoner of war camp was set up during World War II , to which many members of the former Africa Corps of the German Wehrmacht were brought.
