Michael Blumlein

Michael John Blumlein (born June 28, 1948 in San Francisco , California - † October 24, 2019 ) was an American writer .

Life

Michael Blumlein studied medicine at the University of California, San Francisco , and worked as a doctor, including in the internal department of the university hospital there, where he also taught, as well as in the San Quentin State Prison and in Connecticut.

Blumlein was married and had a daughter. He died in October 2019 at the age of 71 after a long illness of complications from bronchial carcinoma .

His first short story, Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report , was published in the British science fiction magazine Interzone in 1984 . His first novel, The Movement of Mountains , was published in 1987 by St. Martin's Press, New York . His second novel, X, Y , appeared in 1993 and was made into a film in 2004. He wrote the screenplay for the British short film Decodings (1988), which won the jury award at the San Francisco International Film Festival . A short story collection called The Brains of Rats was published in 1989. It was nominated for both the World Fantasy Award and the Bram Stoker Award and won the Readercon Small Press Award . A collection of all of his short stories and short stories was published in 2018 with the title All I Ever Dreamed .
