Michael Cleary ( Michael Arthur "Mike" Cleary; born April 30, 1940 in Randwick ) is a retired Australian sprinter , rugby player and politician .

He started out as a rugby union player and was a member of the Australian national rugby union team in 1961 .

At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1962 he won bronze over 100 yards and was fifth over 220 yards and with the Australian 4-by-110-yard relay. He set his personal best over 100 m of 10.3 s on January 5, 1963 in Brisbane .

In 1962 he moved to the rugby league . He played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs until 1970 , then for a year with the Sydney Roosters . From 1962 to 1969 he was a member of the Australian National Rugby League team and the New South Wales Blues .

From 1974 to 1991 was a member of the Australian Labor Party in the lower house of the New South Wales Parliament . From 1981 to 1988 he was Minister for Sports, Leisure and Tourism in the New South Wales Government .

In 1999 he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame .
