Michael Gutmann (born June 20, 1956 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German screenwriter and director.

life and work

He first studied art and German for teaching at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , but then worked first as a draftsman and author for the satirical magazine Titanic , for example, with Bernd Pfarr , with whom he became friends until his death Association.

Finally he began a second degree at the University of Television and Film Munich , where he graduated in 1986 as a director with the film Cargo (co-financed by ZDF, among others ). This was followed by several directorial work for television series (including a case for two ) and various short films. His breakthrough as a screenwriter in the cinema came in 1995 with the film After Five in the Urwald , directed by Hans-Christian Schmid . In 1998, the television film Just for one night , which he wrote and directed, was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize , among other things . In addition to his own work as a director, Michael Gutmann mainly attracted attention through his further collaborations with Hans-Christian Schmid, with whom he made the films 23 - Nothing is as it seems , lights and the novel adaptation Crazy .

Since the end of the nineties, Michael Gutmann has also appeared as a lecturer, primarily for screenplay, and has been the first professor for screenwriting at the HFF Munich since 2005. He lives in Munich.
