Canon Michael Haller

Michael Georg Haller (born January 13, 1840 in Neusath near Nabburg ( Upper Palatinate ); † January 4, 1915 in Regensburg ) was a German church musician and composer .

Life

From 1852 Haller received his first musical training as a convent student in the Benedictine abbey in Metten . In 1860 he began to study theology in the seminary in Regensburg. After his ordination in 1864 he became prefect of the choirboy school (cathedral priest ) in Regensburg. This position made it possible to exchange ideas with advocates of Cäcilianism , such as Joseph Schrems , with whom he studied church music, Franz Xaver Haberl and Carl Proske . As an inspector of the study seminar, Haller became Kapellmeister at the old chapel in Regensburg in 1867 . After founding the church music school in Regensburg, Haller taught composition and counterpoint from 1874 . In 1882 he briefly held the office of cathedral music director at Regensburg Cathedral and was thus also director of the Regensburger Domspatzen . In 1899 he became a canon of the collegiate church for the old chapel .

Haller was a main master of the Cäcilians, "a dignified church composer", "a composer who is fair in all saddles" and participated "in the creation of a refined church music style that was conscientiously trained by the old masters". The "sparing melisms and the harmonious harmony" are described as characteristic for him . Haller created diverse liturgical compositions such as two- to eight-part masses , motets and hymns. He also composed a number of oratorios , cantatas , secular choirs and songs as well as musical plays.

Honors

Pope Leo XIII. awarded him the Order of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .

The University of Würzburg awarded him an honorary doctorate (Dr. theol. Hc).
