Joseph Schrems
Joseph Schrems (born October 5, 1815 in Warmensteinach , † October 25, 1872 in Regensburg ) was a German priest, music researcher, choir conductor and church musician. Joseph Schrems was cathedral music director in Regensburg from 1839 to 1871 .
Life
Schrems was trained in Amberg and Regensburg. After his ordination in 1838, he worked as a pastor in Hahnbach . In December 1839 he was appointed by Bishop Franz Xaver Schwäbl to succeed Johann Evangelist Deischer as cathedral music director and inspector of the Regensburg singing boys' seminar , the cathedral priest . In the tradition of his predecessors, Schrems initially devoted himself primarily to instrumental church music. From 1853, however, he increasingly resorted to the old classical vocal polyphony. Regensburg thus became the nucleus of the church music renewal movement known as Cäcilianism .
In the middle of the 19th century, Joseph Schrems ushered in a new heyday of liturgical chant in Regensburg Cathedral with the Regensburger Domspatzen .
Together with Carl Proske and Johann Georg Mettenleiter , Schrems became a co-founder of the so-called Regensburg tradition in the course of adopting the ancient Roman way of performing .
Important students of Joseph Schrems were Michael Haller , Franz Xaver Witt , Friedrich Koenen and Utto Kornmüller , among others .
Schrems continued Carl Proskes Musica Divina and rewrote many masterpieces of Renaissance polyphony for practical choral use. In doing so, he played a decisive role in the abundance of the Regensburg Cathedral's music archive .
