Michael Heberer (* around 1560 in Bretten ; † after 1623 ) was a German travel writer and poet.

Life

Heberer was related to Philipp Melanchthon on his mother's side . He was the son of Johann Heberer and Katharina Schwarzerdt. This was the daughter of Georg Schwarzerdt, the brother of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon (Schwarzerdt). Heberer first attended school in his hometown and then went to high school in Heidelberg . He began studying at the University of Wittenberg in 1575, continued at the University of Leipzig in 1587 and probably also attended the University of Heidelberg .

He then went on a journey that took him from 1582 via France and Italy to Egypt . In May 1585 he was taken prisoner by the Turks, whereupon he spent three years as a slave on a galley. After he had regained his freedom in 1587, he returned to Germany via Italy and Spain and entered the service of Elector Friedrich IV of the Palatinate in 1592 , where he rose to become a chancellery.

After traveling three more times, his biography appeared in Heidelberg in 1610, describing his experiences in the Orient. This description, reissued in 1710, describes his experiences, strange ways of life, religious customs, buildings and works of art as well as nature. Heberer also wrote Latin and German poems.

The house where he was born, the so-called Hebererhaus in Bretten, was destroyed by a devastating fire on the night of September 6th to 7th, 2007. In May 2009 it became known that the reconstruction was being delayed due to massive problems with insurance; the house has been under construction since 2010.
