Michael John "Bloomer" Bloomfield (born March 16, 1959 in Flint , Michigan ) is a former American astronaut .

Life

Michael Bloomfield was awarded in 1981 a Bachelor in engineering mechanics from the US Air Force Academy and in 1993 a master as an industrial engineer from the Old Dominion University .

He completed his pilot training at Vance Air Force Base in 1983 and was then used as an F-15 fighter pilot and instructor at various air force bases until 1991 , including Bitburg Air Base in Germany. In 1992 Bloomfield came to the test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base and flew various models of the F-16 as a test pilot .

Astronaut activity

In 1994 Bloomfield was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. Since March 1995 he worked in various departments at the Johnson Space Center .

STS-86

On September 26, 1997, Bloomfield flew as a pilot on the space shuttle Atlantis to the Mir space station . The aim of the mission was the replacement of the Mir crew member Michael Foale by David Wolf , a spacewalk (EVA) of Vladimir Titov and Scott E. Parazynski and supplying the space station Mir with water, spare parts, experiments and other goods.

STS-97

His next flight into space took him to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 1, 2000 with the space shuttle Endeavor . The five-person crew brought the grid structure P6 , equipped with solar panels for power generation and radiators for cooling, to the station. After docking, the element was removed from the orbiter's cargo bay and connected to the space station with three exits. Only then were the hatches opened and the ISS crew could greet the Endeavor crew. The shuttle started returning just one day later.

STS-110

On his last mission, Bloomfield flew into space on April 8, 2002 as commander of the space shuttle Atlantis. The mission task was to bring the grid element S0 to the international space station and assemble it. In addition, the Mobile Transporter, which is part of the Mobile Servicing System , was brought to the ISS. A total of four EVAs were conducted while the Atlantis was connected to the ISS.

According to NASA

Bloomfield left the US space agency in July 2007 and accepted a position at Alliant Techsystems shortly thereafter . He is currently Vice President of the Constellation Systems department and is responsible for the development of the Ares missile. He also directs the office of the company in Houston ( Texas ).
