Michael Joswig

Michael Joswig (born December 16, 1965 in Iserlohn ) is a German mathematician .

Life

Joswig studied mathematics at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and mathematics with a minor in computer science at the ETH Zurich . During his studies he became a member of the Tübingen Wingolf . He completed his studies in 1991 with a diploma thesis on "Projectivities of generalized polygons and Moufangachecke" and received his doctorate in 1994 under Theo Grundhöfer with a thesis on "Translation rectangles". For the next two years he went to the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation in Linz as a research fellow and postdoc .

After his return, Joswig went to Berlin, where he worked from 1996 to 1999 as an employee of Günter Ziegler at the TU Berlin . After a substitute professorship from 1999 to 2000 in Frankfurt a. M. He qualified as a professor at the Technical University of Berlin in 2000 with “Contributions to polytop theory and incidence geometry”. After four years as a private lecturer at the TU Berlin, he became a professor at the TU Darmstadt for algorithmic discrete mathematics. In 2009, he turned down a professorship at Kyūshū University in Fukuoka , Japan. Since 2013 he has held an Einstein Professorship for Discrete Mathematics / Geometry at the TU Berlin.

Joswig works on problems of discrete mathematics and in particular discrete geometry , polyhedron theory, algorithmic geometry , combinatorial topology, discrete differential geometry, tropical geometry , computer algebra and visualization. The focus is on the development of mathematical software and thus at the interface between pure and applied mathematics. The aim is to program complex tools not only for processing mathematical problems, but also for engineering and specific applications. This includes the freely available polymake software for examining convex polytopes. The processes that Joswig makes available in software systems can also be used to optimize traffic planning, model economic processes or reconstruct biological processes in development models.

From 2008 to 2009 he wrote articles for the column numbers salad , which appeared in the Handelsblatt . Since 2011 he has been co-editor of “Contributions to Algebra and Geometry”. He is also a member of the DFG Research Center Matheon and was the editor in charge of the “Notices of the German Mathematicians Association ” from 2013-2016 and as such also a member of the DMV board.
