Michael Kalu Ukpong

Michael Kalu Ukpong (born December 15, 1964 in Amaekpu Ohafia ) is a Nigerian Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Umuahia .

Life

Michael Kalu Ukpong first attended the boys' seminary in Ahiaeke and then studied at the seminaries in Owerri and Ikot Ekpene . On August 7, 1993, Bishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji donated him the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Umuahia.

After a year of chaplaincy in pastoral care, he was personal secretary of the bishop until 1996. Afterwards he was editor of the diocese newspaper Lumen Newspaper from 1999 to 2001 in addition to other activities in pastoral care . In 2004 he went to Germany for further studies. First he studied canon law at the Klaus Mörsdorf Institute for Canon Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 2008 to 2014 he studied at the University of Regensburg , where he received his doctorate in churches . During this time he was also active in the parish pastoral care in Reinhausen from 2008 to 2011 and in Ascholtshausen from 2011 to 2013 . From 2013 to 2016 he was a pastor in the parish community Beratzhausen- Pfraundorf. After returning home, he headed the Coronata High School in Asaga Ohafia from 2016 to 2018 . Since 2018 he has been pastor in Umuahia and chancellor of the diocesan curia.

Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Igilgili and auxiliary bishop in Umuahia on May 30, 2020 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Nigeria, Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi , donated him episcopal ordination on July 30th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Owerri , Anthony John Valentine Obinna , and the Bishop of Umuahia, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji.
