Michael Kunzler

Michael Kunzler (born August 23, 1951 in Saarbrücken ; † December 15, 2014 there ) was professor of liturgical science at the Theological Faculty of Paderborn .

Life

He was the older of two sons. After graduating from high school, Kunzler studied Catholic theology and philosophy from 1970 to 1975 at the University of Trier , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Saarland University in Saarbrücken. In 1978 he was by the Theological Faculty of Trier with the work The Eucharist theology of Hadamar priest and humanist Gerhard Lorich to Dr. theol. PhD . He was ordained a deacon on December 17, 1979 . On July 5, 1980, he received the sacrament of ordination . At the same time he was entrusted for the first time by the Roman Congregation for the Eastern Churches with the part-time pastoral care for the Catholic Ukrainians of the Byzantine rite residing in Saarland .

From 1980 to 1983 he was chaplain in Völklingen and from 1983 to 1984 vicar to Herz Mariä in Dorf im Warndt . From 1980 to 1988 he worked in parish and university pastoral care as well as a high school teacher .

From 1982 to 1990 he had a teaching position for liturgical science at the State University of Music in Saarbrücken . In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen with the font Gnadenquellen. Symeon of Thessaloniki († 1429) as an example of the influence of Palamism on the orthodox theology of the sacraments and liturgy . In 1988 he received a call to the professor for liturgical studies at the Theological Faculty of Paderborn.

In 1995 Kunzler was appointed a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism in Paderborn, and one year later he was accepted into the Scientific Directory of the international theological textbook series AMATECA. Since 1998 he has also worked as a visiting professor at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and since 1999 as a visiting professor at the Theological Faculty of Lugano . From 1999 to 2002 Kunzler held an additional teaching position for Byzantine liturgical science at the theological faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt for students of the Collegium Orientale .

In 2001 he was appointed advisor to the liturgy commission of the German Bishops' Conference . On October 13, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Michael Kunzler as advisor to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . Kunzler wrote practice-related books on the Catholic liturgy , which, due to their clarity, were designed especially for lay people who are committed to the Church.

Honors

In 2002 he was raised to the status of a staurophore (carrying a pectoral cross) protopresbyter of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church . Since July 4, 2005 he has been the mitrophoric protopresbyter of the Ukrainian-Greek Catholic Church. This honorary title allowed him to wear a miter during some liturgical services . In October 2008 Michael Kunzler was appointed papal honorary chaplain with the title Monsignor .
