Michael Kuoni (born January 29, 1839 in Maienfeld ; † August 27, 1891 in Seewis in Prättigau ) was the head of the Federal Telegraph Office in Chur and the author of novellas and idylls in Prättigau and sometimes also rulers dialect.

Life and writing

Kuoni was not allowed to study due to an eye condition, which is why he started a civil service career.

Widely known around he was with his contributions in Otto Suter master Saddlestitching Schwizer-Dütsch, for which he contributed 1882-1884 several texts. According to Otto von Greyerz, the Spusagang published there is said to be the first Swiss-German Alpine novel . Other texts that he wrote for Sutermeister were Alpine Idyll and Bauerntypen as well as a text about The Witches Courts in the Prättigau . Another publication organ was the Bündner Volksblatt , whose publishing house published the articles Herbstbletter us'm Rhätikon and Das alt Gannyer-Bad in 1886/87 . His delight in the authentic dialect was also reflected in the innumerable notes in which he explains words that were incomprehensible to the broader readership.

Kuoni wrote in several dialects: he had learned the Maienfeld dialect from his father, that of Schiers from his mother. He also wrote in the Seewiser dialect , where he lived with his wife Ursula, born Hitz, and a text is written in the idiom of St. Antönien . Along with Georg Fient , he was one of the most famous Walser German authors of the Prättigau and Graubünden at the time; Unlike his creations, however, Kuoni's works were not reissued in later decades.

In addition to his literary work, he also tried his hand at linguistics. His publication, Remains of the Romance Language in the Valleys of Landquart and Plessur (Prätigau-Schanfigg) , in some cases, did not go beyond amateur speculation.
