Michael Palaiologos the Younger
Michael Palaiologos ( Middle Greek Μιχαὴλ Παλαιολόγος ; * between 1351 and 1354; † 1376 or 1377 in Dristra ) was a Byzantine prince.
Life
Michael was the third son of Emperor Johannes V. Palaiologos (1341-1391) and his wife Helena Kantakuzene . His older brothers were the future emperors Andronikos IV and Manuel II , his younger brother the future despot Theodor I of Morea ; he also had five sisters. At an unknown point in time, Michael was raised to despot, the second highest rank in the Byzantine court hierarchy after the basileus .
1366 accompanied Michael Palaeologus his father on his visit to the Hungarian capital of Buda to at King I. Ludwig military help against the Ottomans to ask. From 1371 he officiated as governor of his father in the port city of Mesembria on the Thracian Black Sea coast . Here he briefly came into conflict with the Bulgarian despot Dobrotitsa , who ruled the region on the lower Danube , later named after him Dobrudscha . As a result, however, the two made peace, which they confirmed by the marriage of the Byzantine prince with a daughter of Dobrotizas.
On the initiative of his father-in-law, Michael sailed with three ships to Trebizond at the beginning of November 1373 to meet Emperor Alexios III. To overthrow Megas Komnenos , who had ruled the breakaway coastal region in northern Asia Minor since 1349 . The undertaking failed miserably: the despot anchored his flotilla in front of the port of Trebizond, only to return home five days later without having achieved anything.
Michael Palaiologos was murdered in Dristra in 1376 or 1377 by his Bulgarian brother-in-law Terter . The background to this act is not known.
