Michael Richter (Medievalist)

Michael Richter (born March 30, 1943 in Waldenburg ; † May 23, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German historian .

Michael Richter studied history and English from 1962 to 1968 in Marburg, Berlin and London. In 1968 he received his doctorate with Wilhelm Berges at the Free University of Berlin with the work Normans and Welsh with Giraldus Cambrensis . Richter was a senior research fellow at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth from 1968 to 1970 . From 1970 to 1972 he was a fellow of the German Research Foundation in London, Canterbury and the Vatican . From 1972 to 1986 Richter was a lecturer in Medieval History at University College Dublin . In 1980 he completed his habilitation externally at theUniversity of Trier with Hans Hubert Anton . From 1981 to 1982 he was visiting professor at the University of Vienna . From 1986 to 2008 Richter taught as professor for constitutional history of the Middle Ages at the University of Konstanz . Richter was a permanent visiting professor at the Central European University from 2000 .

His research interests were the history of the Celtic countries in the Middle Ages, Ireland and Europe in the early Middle Ages, oral culture in the early Middle Ages, the history of music in the early Middle Ages, and the early history of Bobbio Abbey . Matthias Becher was one of his most important students .
