Michael Schulz (born April 6, 1958 in Rostock ) is a former German soccer player. In GDR football, he played for Stahl Riesa , BSG Stahl Brandenburg and BFC Dynamo in the Oberliga , the top division. With the BFC, Schulz was three times GDR champion and one cup winner.

Soccer career

At the age of eight, Schulz was accepted into the FC Hansa Rostock children's team. From 1973 to 1976 he went through the junior teams of the company sports community (BSG) Post Neubrandenburg , which took him over in 1976 in their second-rate GDR league team . After completing his apprenticeship as a maintenance mechanic, Schulz was drafted in November 1977 for 18 months of military service and during this time he played football for the Vorwärts Löcknitz army sports community . With this team he rose in 1978 to the third-rate district league Neubrandenburg .

In the spring of 1981 Schulz moved from the BSG Post Neubrandenburg, for which he played 41 league games (8 goals), to the upper division Stahl Riesa. There he was used as a striker in the last three league games and scored his first league goal on the last day of the match. Riesa had to relegate to the GDR league at the end of the season and Schulz, despite reaching the promotion round, did not make a direct return to promotion with the steelworkers. In the summer of 1982 Schulz joined the GDR league club Stahl Brandenburg. In 1984 Schulz was promoted to the league with the Brandenburgers. With 29 appearances in the league games and seven goals, he contributed 1.77 m tall midfielder significantly to this success. In the first Brandenburg league season, Schulz only missed one game and was a fixture in the midfield of the steelworkers. Brandenburg secured relegation, and in the league season 1985/86 Schulz seamlessly built on his constant performance. He completed all 13 league games by the end of the first half of the season, in which he was also successful with three goals.

At the beginning of the second half of the season, the GDR champions BFC Dynamo secured the services of the reliable midfield player. Initially, however, Schulz was mainly used as a pre-stopper in the master eleven. Also at the BFC he was used in all 13 point games until the end of the season and was then able to decorate himself with his first championship title. In the two following seasons, in which the BFC defended its championship title, Schulz maintained his place in the regular team and was now also used in his usual position in midfield. On June 4, 1988, the BFC won the GDR soccer cup with a 2-0 victory over FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Schulz was only brought on in the 114th minute, but made the Berlin victory perfect after just two minutes with the goal to 2-0. Schulz played his last league season at BFC in 1988/89. Now 30 years old, he was only used in 14 point games, but only played four of them over the full time. When he successfully defended the cup in 1989, he was no longer there. After 74 league games with three goals and seven appearances in the European Cup for the BFC Dynamo, Michael Schulz ended his career as a competitive athlete in the summer of 1989 at the age of 31.

For two seasons from 1989 to 1991 Schulz was active for Stahl Hennigsdorf in the GDR and NOFV league. After the reunification of Germany, Schulz relocated to north-west Germany and played with Steffen Baumgart for three years at the Lower Saxony association league club SpVg Aurich . Subsequently, he trained among other things in East Friesland lower-class football teams in Moordorf and Großefehn .
