Michael Shih (violinist)

Michael Shih is an American violinist and music educator from Taiwan .

Shih studied at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang . Other teachers were Chiu-Sen Chen , Masao Kawasaki , Shue-Tee Lee and Margaret Pardee . From 1995 to 2001 he taught at the Lucy Moses School for Music and Dance in New York City. He has been teaching at Texas Christian University since 2004, initially as an adjunct instructor and later as a Distinguished Guest Professor . Since 2013 he has been a visiting professor at East China Normal University .

As a chamber musician, Shih has worked with Leon Fleisher , Sharon Isbin , Jaime Laredo , Cho-Liang Lin , Yo-Yo Ma , Michael Tree and Charles Wadsworth , among others , and was first violinist of the Whitman Quartet from 1992 to 2002 . He participated in various music festivals (including Aspen, Bard, Chamber Music Northwest, Chautauqua, La Jolla, Spoleto) and has performed at Chiehshou Hall Concert in the Office of the President of Taiwan, at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Chamber Music International in Dallas on. The concert series Cliburn at the Bass and Cliburn at the Modern of the Van Cliburn Society he played works by John Corigliano , Sebastian Currier , Osvaldo Golijov , Jennifer Higdon and Lowell Liebermann .

Shih made his debut as a violin soloist at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in 1992 . This was followed by appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in the Hollywood Bowl , the Little Orchestra Society in the Avery Fisher Hall , the Williamsburg Symphonia , the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra , the New York Youth Symphony , the San Pedro Sula Symphony in Honduras and the Taipei Symphony at the Taipei National Concert Hall. In 2007 he gave the world premiere of Kevin Puts ' Violin Concerto under the direction of Miguel Harth-Bedoya with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra , of which he has been concertmaster since 2001. With this orchestra he undertook concert tours through the USA and Taiwan, Canada, France, Germany, Costa Rica, Honduras, Peru, Japan and Korea.
