Michael Smith (born August 3, 1951 in Chicago ) is an American video and performance artist .

life and work

Michael Smith graduated from Colorado College with a bachelor's degree and was a participant in the Whitney Museum of American Art's free study program . Smith has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles , the California Institute of the Arts , the Art Center College of Design , the Cranbrook Educational Community , the University of Illinois at Chicago , the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts , the Pratt Institute, and Yale University . Michael Smith has been Professor at the University of Texas at Austin since 2001 .

Well-known performances by Michael Smith are Mike's House and Avuncular Quest , which were shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1982 . In 2014 Michael Smith was invited to the Museum of Modern Art to perform a performance on the composition 4'33 "by John Cage .

Michael Smith took part in documenta 8 in 1987 with the video Go for it Mike (1984) .
