Michael Sohn (born October 25, 1957 in Berlin ) is a German industrial designer specializing in rail vehicles.

Life

Grew up in East Berlin, after training as a machinist with a high school diploma at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee (KHB), from 1979 to 1984 he studied industrial design under Erich John , Alfred Hückler , Dietmar Palloks and Christa Petroff-Bohne . After graduating, Sohn worked in the Berlin studio of the VEB design project and worked on various products, from razors to agricultural machines. From 1986 he was a member of the Berlin Head of Forms and Crafts of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK).

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Michael Sohn moved to the design team at Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke (LEW) in Hennigsdorf under the leadership of Lutz Gelbert in 1990 . The company changed ownership several times in the following years and traded as AEG (1992–1995), Adtranz (1996–2001) and from 2001 as Bombardier Transportation . Until 2005 he worked as deputy team leader for various vehicle projects. He has been in charge of industrial design since 2006 and is currently responsible for the Central and Eastern Europe region and the CIS countries.

From 2016 he will lead the Bombardier internal global network of industrial designers, the so-called Center of Competence (CoC) for industrial design, to which all designers employed by Bombardier Transportation belong.

In addition to his academic training as an industrial designer and practicing it, Sohn dealt with the history of shipping and shipbuilding at an early stage. The acquaintance with the Berlin painter and graphic artist Georg Seyler had a decisive influence on him. This resulted in works in the illustrative and journalistic area for magazines and publishers such as Modellbau heute , Alte Schiff or the Hinstorff Verlag .
