Michael Spyres

Michael Spyres (* 1980 in Mansfield , Missouri ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).

Career

He grew up in a family of musicians. He began his vocal training in the USA and continued it later at what was then the Vienna Conservatory (today: Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna ).

After his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 2006 as Jaquino in Fidelio , Spyres appeared in the role of Alberto in Rossini's La gazzetta at the Festival Rossini in Wildbad and sang Alfredo in La Traviata on a tour through Japan. He returned to Bad Wildbad in 2008 with the title role in Rossini's Otello .

In the 2008/2009 season, Michael Spyres became a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin , where he could be heard in roles such as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Steuermann in The Flying Dutchman . In 2008/2009 he made his debut in La favorite in London, as Belfiore in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims at La Scala in Milan and as Raoul in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots in New York .

In the 2010s he was in Bernstein's Candide at the Vlaamse Opera , as Roméo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette at the Opera Ireland, as Néoclès in Rossini's Le siège de Corinthe at the Bad Wildbader Rossini Festival and in Roméo et Juliette at the Salzburg Festival and as Ozìa in Mozart's Betulia liberata with Riccardo Muti in Salzburg and Ravenna.

Games in the 2010/2011 season included Tamino in Liège, Mazzoni's Antigono in Lisbon, Gianetto in La gazza ladra in Dresden and Arnold in Rossini's Guillaume Tell at the Caramoor Festival. On the concert platform he sang in a series of concerts by Verdi's Otello with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti, Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust with the American Symphony Orchestra and an aria concert in Moscow .

2011/2012 he appeared as Rodrigo in Rossini's La donna del lago at La Scala, in a concert tour with John Eliot Gardiner with Beethoven's 9th Symphony , in the title role of Bernstein's Candide at the Opera House in Rome, as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor at at the Minnesota Opera, as Masaniello in Auber's La muette de Portici in Paris and as Baldassare in Rossini's Ciro in Babilonia at the Caramoor Festival and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro.

In the 2012/2013 season Michael Spyres made his debut at the Liceu in Barcelona in the title role of Les Contes d'Hoffmann . Further engagements in 2012 and 2013 include Faust in Berlioz ' La damnation de Faust at the Vlaamse Opera, Beethoven's Missa solemnis and 9th Symphony at Carnegie Hall and in Costa Mesa with John Eliot Gardiner, Orombello in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda in the Carnegie Hall, Masaniello in La muette de Portici in Bari, Verdi's Messa da Requiem in Porto, Leicester in Maria Stuarda in Washington, Candide in the Vlaamse Opera and Rodrigo in La donna del lago at the Royal Opera House in London.

In 2015 he was nominated for the International Opera Award as best singer.

Michael Spyres recorded Rossini's La gazzetta , Otello and Le siège de Corinthe for Naxos and a solo CD, A Fool For Love, for Delos.
