Michael Stein (1998)

Michael Joachim Willi Oskar Stein (born July 9, 1952 in Berlin ; † October 24, 2007 in Zweibrücken ) was a German musician , cabaret artist and author .

Life

Pill Palle and the Ötterpötter

In 1978 Michael Stein founded the band Pille Palle and the Ötterpötter together with Jochen Staadt , Rainer Glienke, Dieter Westmeier, Gerd Udo Heinemann and Frank Augustin . The band was closely associated with the self-managed Mehringhof project center, which has been based in a former machine factory in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 1979 . The group also made a brief appearance in the feature film The Heartbreakers (1982). Michael Stein worked on new recordings of the group's songs in 2006/2007.

Michael Stein also played temporarily in the Berlin bands Bleibtreu Revue , Z and Dildo took a taxi .

Work with Manfred Maurenbrecher

Michael Stein was a member of Manfred Maurenbrecher's band around 1984 . There he played saxophone, bass and electric guitar. His “introverted emotional” jazz sounds were a “brilliant musical” counterpart to a number of song texts. It was always reserved for Stein to talk about a picnic peppered with pitch-black humor in a chant interlude.

Mocking newsreel

Because he was a member of the Höhnenden Wochenschau from 1989 to 1991 (including Klaus Nothnagel , Wiglaf Droste , Cluse Krings , Wolfgang Kröske alias "Dr. Seltsam") - the mother of all Berlin reading stages  - he is considered a veteran of this type of event, which he up to had actively shaped the end of his life. Since then, he has appeared on all reading stages that were created in Berlin in the early 1990s with his prominent help.

Benno Ohnesorg Theater

At the Volksbühne Berlin he organized the monthly political show Benno-Ohnesorg-Theater (1991-1994) together with Wiglaf Droste . The character Kommissar Schulz (“We want you to live safely”) was developed, which was also produced for a separate radio show in Berlin (Radio P, Radio Fritz ).

“Like his friend Wiglaf Droste, he could have pursued a successful career as a writing musician, singing writer or saxophone-playing guitarist, but Michael Stein left whenever there was a threat of success or continuity. He was a special, unique cross-border commuter, sociable and affable, uncompromising to the point of rigidity and madness. "

Home & World reform stage

In 1995 he was one of the co-founders of the Reformbühne Heim & Welt .

Surf poets

Between 1996 and 1997 he developed the idea of the surf poet , together with Ahne , Robert Weber , Lt. Surf and Hans Duschke in the mine .

Prayer against work

Prayer against work (original)

He fought his whole life against the "illusory worlds".

For years he fought in a kind of S-Bahn cabaret with the BVG controllers . If he was asked for the ticket, he said: “I am a Buddhist and you are an illusion!” Only to show his ticket after the longest possible conversation.

Michael Stein was of the opinion that unemployment should be taken for granted in society and that every person should actually be a need. In this context he wrote the prayer against work around 1998 , which he said together with the audience during his performances. In doing so, he wanted to spread the idea that “work for everyone” is no longer a contemporary requirement. He liked to explain how the prayer works by saying that those involved who say the prayer generate a morphic field that can later capture other people.

The prayer against work became an integral part of every surf poet event.
