Michael Ulrich Dardenne (born June 23, 1924 in Dreiborn-Gierberg ; † October 21, 2001 in Bonn ) was a German physician .

Michael Ulrich Dardenne graduated from high school at the age of 16. As a soldier, he returned in 1943 at the age of 19 with a war wound. He studied medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he was awarded a Dr. med. doctorate and habilitation. He completed a specialist training as an ophthalmologist . In 1966 he was appointed adjunct professor for microsurgery of the eye at the University of Bonn . For many years he was the head of the microsurgery department of the eye clinic at the University Hospital Bonn . In 1989 he retired.

In 1989 he founded the Ulrich Dardenne Foundation with the Dardenne Eye Clinic in Bonn Bad Godesberg, one of the first pure centers and specialty clinic for eye operations. Dardenne has received several awards for his services, particularly in developing countries.

In 1980, the Catholic Dardenne was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien de Fürstenberg and invested on May 10, 1980 in St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster by Cardinal Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the Order.

Act

The focus of teaching and research was microsurgery of the eye, in particular laser procedures for correcting ametropia and the implantation of artificial lenses for treating cataracts. He was considered a pioneer in the field of outpatient eye surgery and developed what is now the modern surgical method known as phacoemulsification . In 1977 he was elected director of the International Society for Phacoemulsification and Cataract Methodology.
