Life

Michaela Maria Müller grew up on a farm near Dachau. After training as a publishing clerk and employed as a bookseller in Munich and New York, she studied history and political science at the Humboldt University in Berlin . She graduated with a historical study of cricket in England and India. She works as a freelance journalist and reporter for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Zeit Online and Qantara, among others , and runs the blog Refugees in Europe .

In 2015 her essayistic story Before Lampedusa was published. A journey that is about her encounter with the place she visited after the boat accident in 2013 and the fate of the refugees from Eritrea and Somalia on the Italian island, who are deported to Tripoli and from there to the Sahara without a procedure . Elke Heinemann described the book in the FAZ as a “postmodern mixture of documentary novel and literary report”. In her book At Sea. The story of Ayan and Samir from 2016, which again combines reportage with fiction, tells Müller about the life of a young couple who flee from Somalia , which was destroyed by civil war , and are left to their fate in a ramshackle boat on the Mediterranean Sea. Christian Bommarius rated the book as "one of the most important new publications of this year".

In the essay Durchs Moor, durch Dachau , she deals with her origins and goes on a search for traces of the National Socialist past.

Müller has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2017 .
