Michel Poncet de La Rivière

Michel Poncet de La Rivière (born July 11, 1671 in Paris , † August 2, 1730 in Angers ) was a French Roman Catholic Bishop of Angers , Commendatarabbot and member of the Académie française . He is not to be confused with his uncle of the same name (1638–1728), Bishop of Uzès , nor with the eponymous Bishop of Sisteron and Archbishop of Bourges (1609–1677).

life and work

Michel Poncet came from the Poncet de la Rivière family, from which four bishops emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries, three of them with the first name Michel. He received his doctorate in theology in 1695, ordained a priest in 1696 and served his uncle as vicar general in Uzès . As an outstanding preacher and orator, he was appointed by the king to be Bishop of Angers in 1706 . In addition, he was from 1700 Commendatabab of the Abbey of Saint-Florent near Saumur and from 1721 of the Abbey of Saint-Junien in Nouaillé-Maupertuis . In 1721 he made his nephew Mathias Poncet de La Rivière (1707-1780), later Bishop of Troyes , at the age of 14 canons of his cathedral and supervised his upbringing. In 1728 he was elected to the Académie française (seat no. 30) and solemnly admitted in early 1729, but died the following year at the age of 59. Apart from numerous occasional writings, letters and sermons, there are no works.
