Michio Kushi
Michio Kushi ( Japanese 久 司 道夫 ); (Born May 17, 1926 in Japan , † December 28, 2014 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was a Japanese nutritionist , an important exponent of macrobiotics in the United States and author of numerous books.
Life
After the Second World War , Kushi studied with the macrobiotic teacher Georges Ohsawa in Japan. He studied law and international relations at Tokyo University and continued his studies at Columbia University after moving to the United States in 1949.
Michio Kushi and his wife Aveline founded Erewhon Natural Foods , the East-West-Journal, the East-West Foundation, the Kushi Foundation and the Kushi Institutes in Becket and in Europe, including Lisbon , Zagreb and Amsterdam .
Aveline and Michio Kuchi have published more than 70 books together or as individual authors. After Aveline's death in 2001, Michio Kuchi married a second time. He last lived with his second wife in Boston, Massachusetts, where he died of complications from pancreatic cancer on December 28, 2014 at the age of 88 . He left four sons, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Awards
Kushi received the Award of Excellence from the United Nations Society of Writers . In 1999 the Smithsonian Institution opened a permanent collection on macrobiotics and alternative health care on his behalf.
For their contribution to nutrition, health and peace in the world, Kushi and his wife received the Courage of Conscience Award from Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts on October 14, 2000 on the grounds that they were more conscious of people who set a good example live and work for world peace.
