Mickey Goldsen

Michael H. "Mickey" Goldsen (pseudonym: Vernon Lee; born September 5, 1912 in Brooklyn , New York , † October 19, 2011 in Encino , California ) was an American music publisher .

Life

Goldsen, born in Brooklyn in 1912 , began his career in 1934 as an accountant for the poetry magazine Song Hits ; later he worked for Lou Levy's music publisher Leeds Music . In the 1940s he was head of the Capitol Songs department of the Capitol Records record label , which had one of the first label-owned music publishers; Goldsen had a 25% stake in this. In 1950 he acquired the remaining shares in the publishing house from Johnny Mercer and Buddy DeSylva in order to set up his own music publisher Criterion Music Corp. and served as its CEO for over half a century. In the 1950s he acquired the Charlie Parker title catalog, as well as a number of jazz compositions by Dizzy Gillespie , Gerry Mulligan and Charlie Barnet ( Skyliner ).

Goldsen published songs such as Lee Hazlewood's These Boots Are Made for Walkin ' in the 1960s , which became a number 1 hit in the US in 1966, and Hawaiian music (which he had specialized in since 1952) such as Don Ho's Tiny Bubbles and Pearly Shells as well as hits by Nancy Sinatra , Jackson Browne ( Doctor My Eyes ) and Johnny Mercer. Goldsen took part in the production of the film Mutiny on the Bounty in 1962 . In the 1970s he was also active in the field of country music and opened an office in Nashville to represent country singers such as Rosanne Cash , Rodney Crowell and Lyle Lovett , as well as the jazz-influenced singer-songwriter Kami Lyle . During this time he was also the first chairman of the Association of Independent Music Publishers . Goldsen was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame for his contributions to Polynesian music .
