Microcachrys is the only plant of monotypic genus Microcachrys from the family of podocarpaceae (Podocarpaceae).

Microcachrys tetragona is native to western Tasmania , on the peaks of the western mountain range and Mount Lapeyrouse .

description

They are low evergreen shrubs . The scale-shaped leaves are about 1.5 mm long and stand in four even rows on the branches.

They are single sexed ( monoecious ). The male and female cones are terminally on different branches of the same plant. The female cones are 6 to 8 mm long. The seeds are surrounded by a red aril .

Systematics

Microcachrys tetragona was first described in 1843 by William Jackson Hooker as Athrotaxis tetragona in his work "Hooker's Icones Plantarum", Volume 6, Plate 560. Joseph Dayton Hooker , his son, introduced the species as Microcachrys tetragona in the genus Microcachrys as early as 1845 . A synonym of the species is Dacrydium tetragonum (Hook.) Parl.
