Mieczysław Litwiński

Mieczysław Eligiusz Litwiński (born July 30, 1955 in Będzin ) is a Polish composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and music teacher.

Litwiński studied composition with Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz and Zbigniew Rudziński at the Warsaw Music Academy . During his stay in the USA from 1986 to 1991 he was influenced by the works of John Cage , whom he met personally. Later he also took courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen . From 1991 he lived and worked in Kaunas, in 2000 he went to Warsaw.

He was the co-founder of several composer and instrumental groups, including the Cytula Tyfun da Bamba Orkiester (with Andrzej Bieżan , Krzysztof Knittel and Tadeusz Sudnik , 1981), the Niezależne Studio Muzyki Elektroakustycznej (with Krzysztof Knittel, Tarzysztof Knittel, and –84), Light from Poland (1985–86), the Litwinski Ensemble & Choir (1987–91), the duo Sol et Luna (with Saba Zuzanna Krasoczko , since 2000) and the improvisation group Kawalerowie Błotni (since 2004). In the improvisation ensemble The Mud Cavaliers he deals with intuitive music . As an interpreter of modern improvisation music and his own compositions, he traveled as a soloist and with ensembles through many countries in Europe, the USA, Canada, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Iran.

In addition to songs and chamber music, Litwiński composed numerous ballet music (including for the choreographers Ohad Naharin , Royston Maldoom , Muna Tseng , Amy Sue Rosen , Pat Cremins , Tamar Rogoff and Marika Blossfeldt ), acting and film music (including for the films Raising Arizona and Barton Fink of the Coen brothers ). In his compositions he combines music of different styles and geographical origins.

Litwiński taught a. a. at the Kaunas University , the University of Warsaw and New York University and the conservatories of Riga, Tallinn and Klaipeda.
