Miguel Urbán Crespo (born March 26, 1980 in Madrid ) is a Spanish social activist and politician ( Podemos ). Urbán is a co-founder of the left collecting movement Podemos . Urbán has been a member of the European Parliament since 2015 and defended his mandate in the 2019 European elections . He is a member of the GUE / NGL group .

Miguel Urbán Crespo was born in Madrid on March 26, 1980, the son of Luis Miguel Urbán Fernández, a fighter of the Revolutionary Communist League ( Liga Comunista Revolucionaria ) who was tortured during the Franco dictatorship . After graduating from secondary school, Urbán studied history at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid , but never graduated.

In parallel to his studies, Urbán worked for several NGOs, as editor of the magazine Viento Sur and as cultural manager of the cooperative bookstore La Marabunta . As a political activist, Urbán was a member of the student movement, about which he has written numerous articles and books. He also took part in the anti-globalization movement, in protests against the war in Iraq and in the so-called "15 M" movement.

In the European elections in 2009 Urbán ran on the list of Izquierda Anticapitalista-Revolta Global in 20th place, but won no mandate. In the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2011 , Urbán ran as the top candidate for the Izquierda Anticapitalista in the Madrid constituency, but also did not win a seat.

In spring 2014 Urbán was involved in founding the Podemos party, which emerged as an amalgamation of various smaller left-wing parties. The party first appeared in the 2014 European elections , with Urbán running in seventh place. Podemos won a good 8 percent of the vote and thus 5 of the 54 Spanish mandates, which Urbán narrowly missed the entry.

After the Podemos MPs Carlos Jiménez Villarejo and Teresa Rodríguez resigned from their mandate during the year, Urbán moved up on March 5, 2015. Like the other Podemos MPs, he joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . The parliamentary group members elected him to the parliamentary committee for the period from 2017 to 2019.

He was also a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (2015 only) for his group , as well as the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the associated subcommittee on Human Rights . He was also a member of the investigative committee to examine alleged violations of Union law and abuses in the application of the same in connection with money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion (PANA) as well as the special committee on financial crime, tax evasion and tax avoidance . He was an alternate member of the Budget Committee (2015 only), the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defense (2017-2019).

Re-election in 2019

Urbán ran again for the 2019 European elections , his party Podemos joined the parties Izquierda Unida , Catalunya en Comú and Barcelona en Comú as a list connection " Unidas Podemos Cambiar Europa". Urbán ran in fifth place. The list connection achieved just under 10 percent - a good eight percent less than the combined result of Podemos and Izquierda Unida in the 2014 election - and thus 6 of the 54 Spanish seats. With that, Urbán moved in directly and defended his mandate.

Miguel Urbán rejoined the GUE / NGL group. For his parliamentary group, he is a member of the Development Committee and the Human Rights Subcommittee in the new electoral term . He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .
