Michael "Mike" Joseph Margulis (born August 30, 1950 in St. Louis , Missouri , † September 15, 2018 ) was an American football player in the position of a striker . Although he was never active at the professional level and very little is known about him, he played a game for his home country at the football tournament of the 1972 Summer Olympics .

Career

Born in St. Louis in 1950, the career path of Margulis is largely unclear. While some sources, such as the RSSSF, speak of an affiliation with Saint Louis University , the player does not appear in the team directory of the team that belongs to the sports department of Saint Louis Billikens . After or during his time at St. Louis University, Margulis was involved with the amateur club Busch Soccer Club , although nothing is known about the length of his club membership, nor about any missions. Shortly before his 22nd birthday, which he celebrated in Germany , Margulis traveled with a US Olympic team to the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . One day after his 22nd birthday, he received a special birthday present from coach of the US Olympic team, Bob Guelker , when he was used as a substitute for the third and final game between the United States and Germany . In the encounter, which was played in front of around 65,000 spectators at the Munich Olympic Stadium and clearly won 7-0 by the home side, Margulis came into play in the 62nd minute for striker Mike Flater, who was about the same age . This was also to be his last noteworthy assignment, after which the trail of the young American football player disappears. It can be assumed that Margulis was also used in the qualifying games for the Summer Olympics before his Olympic assignment.
