Mike Mower

Michael Henry "Mike" Mower (born June 9, 1958 in Bath ) is a British jazz musician ( saxophone , flute , composition ).

Live and act

Mower received his first flute lessons in Bath in 1970. After studying the classic flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he became self-taught with the saxophone. In 1985 he co-founded the saxophone quartet Itchy Fingers , which toured the world until its dissolution in 1997 and released various albums. He also leads his Mike Mower Big Band and the Mike Mower Flute Band, for which he also composed.

As a freelance musician, Mower played and played with artists as diverse as Gil Evans , Tina Turner , Paul Weller , Björk (Surrounded) , James Galway and Ryūichi Sakamoto ; In 1987 he was invited to the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden with Carla Bley .

As a composer and arranger, he has worked for big bands such as the BBC Big Band and the Radio Orchestra, the NDR Bigband , the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra and the Texas Tech Wind Orchestra. James Galway (whose albums Tango del Fuego and Unbreak My Heart he produced), Airto Moreira & Flora Purim , Clare Southworth and the Safri Duo as well as ensembles such as the Riga Saxophone Quartet and Saxofourte have given Mower composition commissions. He also arranged for the Eurovision Song Contest .

Mower was named an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
