Mike Smith (saxophonist)
Mike Smith (* 3. March 1957 in Chicago as Michael Alan Smith ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and professor.
Live and act
Smith is a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene. As a young man, he received a scholarship to study at North Texas State University in 1975 , where he earned a Bachelor of Music in 1980 . He then started his music career in the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich from his hometown . Since November 1981 he has been playing every Wednesday at Andy's Jazz Club in Chicago .
Smith also worked in Frank Sinatra's backing band as a soloist and musical director since 1981 . He worked on Sinatra's albums Diamond Jubilee and Come Swing With Me and toured Japan, Australia and Europe with him. His 1994 Sinatra album for Delmark Records is a throwback to his years in the singer's band. Smith also worked with Nat Adderley , Clark Terry , Art Farmer , Tony Bennett , Jimmy Heath , Natalie Cole , Linda Ronstadt , Diane Schuur , Kurt Elling, and Nancy Wilson . He also worked on the album Come By Me by singer Harry Connick, Jr. with.
Smith was also active as a lecturer, u. a. at the Eastman School of Music , the University of North Texas, the Berklee School of Music , the Pepperdine University , the University of Miami and the University of Colorado and held workshops for bands in the US Navy and Air Force in Washington, DC is present, he professor of saxophone at Roosevelt University in Chicago and the Chicago College of Performing Arts .
After Cook and Morton, Smith recalls Cannonball Adderley in his hard bop game , to which he also dedicated his first album Unit 7 , and also to Vincent Herring . Smith received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1985 ; In 1993 he won the Cannonball Adderley Award .
