geography

The Děvín, the highest point of the Mikulovská vrchovina

The Mikulovská vrchovina rises to the right of the Thaya between Nový Přerov , the reservoirs of Nové Mlýny , Bulhary , Mikulov and the border with Austria . It has an extension of 81 km² and an average height of 263.4  m nm The highest peak is the Děvín (549 m), other elevations are Oborá (481 m), Stolová hora (458 m), Pálava (461 m), Stará hora (352 m), Turold (385 m), Svatý kopeček (363 m nm) and Kozí vrch (288 m nm).

To the north, the valley of the Thaya forms the natural border with the Dolnomoravský úval (southern March basin). To the east, the mountainous region between the Thaya and the Včelínek / Niklasgraben also slopes down to the Dolnomoravský úval. The Poysdorf hill country adjoins it to the south . To the southwest, the ridge continues in Austria in the Waschberg zone. To the west - separated by the valley of the Dunajovický potok ( Retzbach ) - the Dunajovické vrchy (Tannowitz Mountains) adjoin the Thaya, which already belong to the Dyjskosvratecký úval (Thaya-Schwarza valley basin ).

Geomorphological sub-units form the Pavlovské vrchy (Pollau Mountains) and the Milovická pahorkatina (Milowitz Hills).

The Mikulovská vrchovina consists of soft flysch layers with Jurassic limestone cliffs .

The mountains are partly forested (especially in the Milovická pahorkatina), but mostly covered by agricultural land, including vineyards. Most of the Mikulovská vrchovina has belonged to the 83 km² Pálava Protected Landscape Area since 1976 and to the Dolní Morava Biosphere Reserve since 1986 (until 2003 the Pálava Biosphere Reserve).
