The mild dwarf ball ( Panellus mitis ) or mild oyster mushroom is a species of mushroom from the genus of the dwarf ball ( Panellus ).

features

The rounded to shell-shaped fruiting bodies of the mild dwarf ball appear sociable or in tiled lawns. They are about 0.5–3 cm wide, white when young, turning flesh brown with age and have a sharp, fine-fringed edge. The surface of the hat is matt to silky-shiny, finely wrinkled radially and hygrophan (becoming lighter in spots) when moist. The hat skin is tough, rubbery and peelable. The lamellas are white, become pale ocher with age, they stand together and are sharply demarcated from the handle, the lamellar edge can be pulled off as a gelatinous thread. The spore powder is white. The stem stands to the side and is short to rudimentary, pink or olive tones can be seen in the surface. The meat smells like a mushroom and tastes mild.

Species of the genus Crepidotus (stump feet) are similar, but they have different colored (pink to ocher-brown) spore powder and grow on hardwood. The tart dwarf ball has an astringent taste and has no peelable skin, the purple-leaved oyster mushroom , which also occurs on softwood , differs from the mild dwarf ball in its purple- brown color.

ecology

The mild dwarf ball is a saprobiontic wood dweller (rarely also a weak parasite) that causes brown rot in the affected wood . The species grows on softwood, especially spruce , and also on fir , pine and other softwoods. The mild dwarf tangle can occur in all forest types in which a suitable substrate is available; it prefers to colonize cool, rainy areas. The fruiting bodies appear mainly in the winter months, mainly from October to the end of March.

distribution

The mild dwarf ball is distributed in the Mediterranean to the boreal areas of the Holarctic , the distribution area includes North America, Siberia, North Africa and Europe, here it was in from Southeast and Western Europe north to the Hebrides, Iceland and Scandinavia, in Eastern Europe to Belarus and Estonia proven.

meaning

The mild dwarf ball is unsuitable as an edible mushroom, as a wood destroyer it is not of forestry importance.
