history
Millaa Millaa Falls
Aborigines were the indigenous people in the region. The place name was derived from the oil willow plant Elaeagnus triflora , which is called Malay in the language of the Aborigines and whose fruits are a seasonal source of food. However, some chroniclers are of the opinion that Millaa means "waterfall" in the language of the indigenous people, or Millaa Millaa = "many waterfalls".
In 1882 the first European settlers explored the area. After the construction of a railway line, more people settled in the place from 1921, who were primarily employed in wood processing and dairy companies. When the railway line was closed in the mid-1960s and agriculture also developed in the direction of large-scale operations, the place experienced an industrial downturn.
