Mimi Thoma (born October 9, 1909 in Munich , † May 16, 1968 in Cologne ) was an internationally known German cabaret artist and chansonnière .

Life

Mimi Thoma, who first trained as a nurse, which was due to her early career aspiration to be a pediatric nurse, began her artistic career relatively late. That is why she, a niece of the poet Ludwig Thoma , only became known to a broad audience in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s as a cabaret artist and chansonnière. During this time she recorded numerous records for Polydor , Telefunken and Deutsche Grammophon , some of which were also intended for the international market.

Her cabaret career began as early as 1930 when Peter Paul Althaus founded his literary cabaret " Der Zwiebelfisch ". Thoma worked there from the start alongside well-known names such as Gustl Weigert , Marietta , Ludwig Kusche and other great Schwabingers .

During the Nazi era , she, too, who like many of her colleagues was tied to her German-speaking audience, made guest appearances in the sense of National Socialist propaganda. For example, she made guest appearances at various evening events of the members of the Reichssender München in the Hofbräusaal, presented by the “Bunte Bühne” Munich, where she presented her chanson program alongside Charlotte Radlayers , Georg Blädel and Hans Löscher . At this time she also took on smaller film roles, such as in Frank Wisbars Fährmann Maria (1936) with Sybille Schmitz and lent Brigitte Horney her singing voice in Gustav Ucicky's sound film At the End of the World (1943/1944 = defector ) . However, she was best known to the general public of her time for her interpretation of the song Peterle .

On September 25, 1945 Mimi Thoma sang chansons on the occasion of a charity event in favor of the Red Cross in the Prinzregententheater alongside Gustav Fröhlich , Otto Wernicke , the State Opera Ballet and the State Operetta under the musical direction of Bertil Wetzelsberger and Kurt Graunke . In the later years of the post-war period, however, she was unable to build on her earlier successes despite continuous tours across Germany (two years accompanied by the composer Gerhard Jussenhoven ) and died in 1968 lonely, disappointed and almost forgotten. She was buried in a row grave in Cologne's Westfriedhof . The grave was cleared after the period of use had expired .

Almost 25 years after her death, the children's song Mamatschi , which she interpreted, was used several times for Steven Spielberg's Oscar -winning drama Schindler's List (1993).
